You have earned heaven if you are going to prepare some tasty broad beans with ham!
This traditional Spanish dish, typical of Granada, has conquered palates throughout Andalusia and beyond. In addition, it is a natural source of vitamin C and minerals thanks to the fresh beans, making it very nutritious.
It is easy to prepare and will not take you more than 20 minutes if you already have the ingredients at home. You don't need many ingredients, so it is a very complete dish for all tastes.
Recipe for broad beans with ham
Broad beans with ham, or havas with ham, can have some variations in their preparation. I love to use Iberian ham, but you can use Serrano ham if you prefer.
Broad beans are a very versatile and delicious vegetable. Cooked, raw, sautéed or mashed, there are many ways to enjoy them. As a seasonal product, they are perfect for including fresh vegetables in your daily meals. Although they are available frozen, I always recommend cooking fresh broad beans to maintain their nutritional benefits to the maximum.
Another optional element of this dish is bacon, which adds more flavor. You can also add white wine or wheat flour to thicken it, but the idea is to highlight the flavor of the vegetable complemented by the salty touch of the ham.
A good trick is to add a fried egg to the recipe, or a little bit of bacon or Iberian pork jowl to give it an extra touch of juiciness.
Ingredients and preparation of broad beans with ham
Ingredients
To prepare some delicious broad beans with ham you will need the following ingredients for four people:
- 1 kilo of broad beans (I recommend that they be fresh, if it is not their season, use frozen ones)
- 250 grams of Iberian ham chopped into small cubes
- 1 medium onion, chopped small
- 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped
- 20 milliliters of olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation

- Shell the broad beans . Once shelled, you can boil them in water for a few minutes until they are ready, or keep them raw to add to the preparation with the other ingredients.
- Heat olive oil in a frying pan . When it is hot, add the onion. When the onion is translucent, add the finely chopped garlic clove.
- Cook over medium heat and cover the pan . If you add them raw, you can add water to soften them. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Be careful not to splash yourself!
- Add the diced Iberian ham LASTLY . With the heat off, add for a couple of minutes and mix in with the beans, this will prevent it from cooking.
- Arrange the beans and ham on deep plates . Enjoy!
To give it a special touch, add a fried egg on top or a little bacon or Iberian jowl for extra juiciness.
